Our story

Why Scottish Kilt Started FreeKilt

FreeKilt exists because Scottish Kilt would rather meet the people who wear its tartan than buy ads in front of them. This is the story of both — the shop, and the contest it funds.

Where it started

Heritage shouldn't be a luxury purchase

Tens of millions of Americans carry Scottish ancestry — a surname, a clan history, a tartan that belongs to their family. But traditional heritage-mill kiltmaking prices most of them out: a single formal kilt can cost more than a month's rent, and "your" tartan is often only available if a mill decides to weave it.

Scottish Kilt started in 2012 to close that gap. Not by cutting corners — by cutting out everyone standing between the person who wants a kilt and the people who make one. Every piece is made in workshops Scottish Kilt owns and runs outright, by a team built and kept since founding.

People before margins

Fair wages, safe workshops, careers — not gig work. Our retention since 2012 is the proof.

Nothing wasted

Tartan offcuts go to small home businesses. Our workshops run on solar power.

Why FreeKilt exists

We wanted a gallery, not a billboard

Scottish Kilt sells tartan in most of the forms it comes in. What we didn't have was photographs of real people actually living in it — not studio shots on a white background, but Highland Games mud, wedding-day nerves, a hike up a hill in the rain. So instead of spending that budget on more advertising, we built a contest and put the budget into prizes instead.

FreeKilt accepts both photos and videos — a still moment or the whole story in motion, whichever captures it better. Every fortnight, we give away $500 toward an exclusive range of made-to-measure pieces to the entry with the most community votes. No purchase necessary, no scoring formula, no catch.

Photo contests

One clear shot of you in your tartan, anywhere, any occasion. The moment matters more than the production quality.

Video contests

Up to 60 seconds of you in your tartan in motion, dancing, marching, laughing at a family gathering. Your story, moving.

$500 in Exclusive Prizes, Every Fortnight

Made-to-measure, shipped worldwide, chosen by whoever earns the most votes from their community. A new cycle opens the moment the last one closes — always another chance to win.

Growing our family

Every entry joins something bigger

We don't publish invented entry counts or vote totals to make the gallery look busier than it is — an empty gallery is honest, and a real one is worth more than a padded one. What we can tell you is what actually happens: every person who enters becomes part of a community built around one shared thing — pride in a pattern that's older than most countries.

That's the family we're building. Not followers, not a mailing list — people who show up fortnight after fortnight, vote for their clan, tag their cousins, and keep a 1,200-year-old tradition genuinely alive instead of preserved behind glass.

The story you're part of

1,200 years, and counting

  1. 843 AD

    Kingdom of Scotland

Kenneth MacAlpin unites the Scots and Picts, founding the first Scottish kingdom — and the first stirrings of clan identity.

  2. 1314

    Battle of Bannockburn

Robert the Bruce defeats Edward II. Scottish independence is secured for centuries — and the clans hold.

  3. 1746

    Suppression of the tartan

After Culloden, the Dress Act bans Highland dress. The tartan goes underground — and endures anyway.

  4. 1822

    The Highland Revival

King George IV visits Scotland in full Highland dress, sparking a renaissance of clan pride that reaches every corner of the diaspora.

  5. Today

    Your entry

Every photo and video submitted to FreeKilt adds one more line to a story that's been unbroken for twelve centuries. That's not marketing copy — it's just what a contest like this actually is.

What "delivered" means

Prizes that actually arrive

A prize is only as good as what happens after you win it. Here's exactly what that looks like: winners are contacted by email within 48 hours of a cycle closing, made-to-measure pieces are cut and dispatched within 3–4 weeks of confirming measurements, and stock pieces ship within 5 working days — worldwide, at our cost.

  • Every prize ships from the same workshops that make Scottish Kilt’s regular range — not a separate, lower-quality "contest tier"
  • Materials are named honestly: premium acrylic tartan, 100% cotton utility kilts, genuine leather — never called wool
  • Your sett, your choice — any tartan in the exclusive range, not a fixed catalogue photo
  • If a specific product is unavailable, you’re offered an alternative of equal or greater value — never a downgrade

The tartan endures. Add your line to it.
