FreeKilt is a photo contest funded and fulfilled by Scottish Kilt. There is no catch, but there is a reason, and you should know what it is before you send us a photograph.
Scottish Kilt sells tartan in most of the forms it comes in. We wanted photographs of real people living with it rather than studio shots on a white background, and we wanted to meet the people who care about clan setts instead of advertising at them. So we give away $200 of the range in exchange for a photograph and permission to show it.
That is the whole model. You get a free entry and a real chance at a piece you choose. We get a gallery of actual customers and a reason for people to come back. Nobody is pretending this is a charity.
What we will not do is dress it up. There are no invented entry counts on this site, no fabricated testimonials, and no stock photography presented as community submissions. If a number appears on FreeKilt it comes from the database, and if it is zero it says zero.
Scottish Kilt is a specialist tartan retailer selling worldwide. The range runs well beyond the garment the contest is named after.
Kilts and utility kilts, skirts, trews, jackets and tartan suits, sashes and ties, home and interiors, fabric by the yard, instruments and accessories, and leather goods.
We name the material on every piece and we do not round it up. Tartan cloth is premium acrylic yarn. Utility kilts are 100% cotton. Leather goods are genuine leather.
We do not describe any product as wool, anywhere, in any context.
Most pieces are cut to your own measurements rather than to a size chart. Allow three to four weeks to make, plus shipping. Stock items ship in five working days.

One photo with tartan clearly visible in it. If you are wearing the tartan, you need to be in the photo.
We do not care what the tartan is on. A contest that only accepts kilts speaks to people who already own one, and that is a fraction of the people who own tartan. So we stopped drawing lines and kept one rule.
